5 Lessons from Our Six-Year Moving Journey

Moving homes can be a rollercoaster of experiences. Brent and I have embarked on this journey six times over the course of six years, and we've had our fair share of ups and downs. Along the way, we've learned valuable lessons that have transformed the way we approach moving. Here are five of our key takeaways:

One. Consider U-Haul Pods for Smoother Moves
If you're not moving an entire household, U-Haul pods can be a game-changer. We hired some help on Dolly to assist with loading the pods, sparing us from the heavy lifting. U-Haul pods offer flexibility, allowing you to schedule deliveries and store your belongings as needed. Plus, they are cost-effective, especially for long-distance moves.

Two. Use Moving as an Opportunity to Declutter
Moving presents a golden opportunity to declutter your life. Embrace it! We've adopted a "Marie Kondo" approach, taking the time to assess what we truly need and donating or discarding the rest. You'd be amazed at how much unnecessary stuff accumulates over the years. Minimizing before you move not only lightens your load but also starts your new chapter with a clean slate.

Three. Prioritize Comfort During Long Drives
Road trips are not everyone's cup of tea, but Brent and I have crisscrossed the country four times while moving. Given our back problems, we've learned the importance of booking accommodations with a bathtub. After a long drive, having a comfortable space to decompress and relax is a game-changer. A soothing soak in a bath can work wonders in easing muscle tightness. We swear by ThermaCare heat wraps, whether it's for long car rides or moving heavy items.

Four. Invest in Reusable Storage Boxes
Consider investing in reusable storage boxes in addition to traditional cardboard ones. While storage boxes may be pricier upfront, they prove their worth when it's time to organize your belongings post-move. We've found them especially handy for storing seasonal items like Christmas decorations and camping gear in our garage. Reusing these boxes helps minimize waste and keeps your space organized. If you do buy cardboard moving boxes, only buy the small size. Anything larger will break on you or be too hard to carry.

Five. Expect the Unexpected
No matter how well you plan, unexpected hiccups are bound to happen during a move. Whether it's delays in transit, unforeseen issues with your new home, or changes in your moving schedule, it's essential to be prepared. Build in extra time, keep essential items handy, stay informed, and have a contingency plan in case of significant delays. This proactive approach will help you navigate unexpected challenges with greater ease.

By learning from our experiences and implementing these lessons, we hope your next move will be a smoother and more organized adventure. Remember that each move is an opportunity for a fresh start, and with the right mindset and preparation, you can turn it into a positive experience.
