Stocking Up for Success: The Essential Guide to Pantry Staples

Moving to a new home always comes with the excitement of a fresh start, and one of the first things on our to-do list is restocking our pantry. As we settle into our new space, we're sharing some of the essential items we've added to our pantry.

1. Dried Beans: A Versatile Staple One pantry staple that consistently finds its way into our shopping cart is dried beans. Not only are they cost-effective, but they're also incredibly versatile. Whether it's black beans, chickpeas, or lentils, dried beans can be a nutritious and hearty addition to a wide range of dishes. The secret to using them effectively is to plan ahead by soaking them overnight. This minimal effort pays off with delicious and budget-friendly meals. I make a lot of hummus, so we go through chickpeas quickly.

2. OXO Storage Containers: Keeping It Organized Maintaining an organized pantry is a game-changer, and for this, we rely on OXO storage containers. These airtight containers are a great investment because they keep our dry goods fresh and free from pests. Plus, they're transparent, so it's easy to see when we're running low on essentials like flour, rice, or pasta. A well-organized pantry makes meal prep smoother and reduces food waste.

3. Sensitive to Scents: Unscented Cleaning Solutions In our household, scent sensitivity is a consideration in every aspect of daily life, including cleaning products. We prefer unscented cleaning solutions or DIY alternatives like bulk baking soda and vinegar. This way, we can keep our kitchen sparkling clean without the overpowering scents that can trigger allergies or sensitivities. It's a small adjustment that makes a big difference in our daily comfort. We use these Unscented Dishwashing tablets

4. Ordering Oats in Bulk: A Granola Lover's Dream For anyone who enjoys making their own granola, ordering oats in bulk is a must. Oats are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of recipes beyond just breakfast. They form the heart of our homemade granola, providing the perfect base for mixing in nuts, dried fruits, and a touch of honey. Having oats on hand means we're always just a step away from a wholesome, homemade snack.

5. High-Heat Oils vs. Oils for Cold Dishes When it comes to cooking oils, our pantry is well-stocked with a variety of options to suit different culinary needs. Understanding which oils are best for high-heat cooking and which are ideal for drizzling over cold dishes is key to elevating your cooking game. Avocado oil or lard is a top pick for high-temperature cooking due to its impressively high smoke point. When it comes to salad dressings, drizzling over fresh vegetables, or making a dipping sauce, you'll want oils that add depth of flavor and complement your ingredients. These oils are best used at room temperature or cold: extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil, walnut oil.

6. Condiments: Flavorful Accents to Every Dish As we continue to curate our pantry with essentials that bring joy to our meals, a well-stocked collection of condiments takes center stage. Condiments are the unsung heroes of the culinary world, transforming ordinary dishes into extraordinary ones with just a dollop, drizzle, or dash. Some of our favorites right now include: Sir Kensington's Mayo, Bachan's Japanese BBQ Sauce, Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard, Tahini, Calabrian Chili Pepper Paste, etc.

Stocking our pantry with these essentials is not just about practicality; it's also about creating a space that feels like home. As we continue to unpack and settle into our new surroundings, our well-stocked pantry is a symbol of comfort and preparedness for the culinary adventures that lie ahead. Whether it's experimenting with new recipes or simply enjoying a comforting bowl of stewed beans, our pantry plays a central role in making our new house truly feel like home.
